Philadelphia 76ers vs Boston Celtics 1 May 2026 Prediction

The 76ers won again at TD Garden and cut the series deficit to one game, 3-2. The problem is that the Celtics have been very comfortable in Philadelphia since the 2023/24 season, winning six of their last seven road head-to-head games at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The question is whether Boston can continue that trend away from home or whether the 76ers will force a decisive Game 7.

Philadelphia Needs Another Huge Game From Embiid and Maxey

The 76ers looked close to finished when they trailed by 13 points in the third quarter of Game 5, 63-50. But Philadelphia did not break. The team responded with a 63-34 run before the final buzzer and won 113-97.

As usual, Embiid and Maxey took more than half of the team’s shots, combining for 41 of Philadelphia’s 78 field-goal attempts. Together, they produced 58 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. Joel and Tyrese both shot above 50%, and with that kind of efficiency from their stars, the 76ers can compete even against the best defense in the league.

Grimes also became an important X-factor off the bench, scoring 18 points on only eight shots. George’s consistency is worth noting as well, as the veteran has kept his field-goal percentage above 49% throughout the playoffs.

Note: Paul George has scored at least 16 points in all five games against Boston.

Predicted Lineup

Philadelphia: Maxey — Edgecombe, Oubre Jr. — George, Embiid

Out: —

Manager: Nick Nurse

The Celtics Blew Another Big Lead

Mazzulla is in the Coach of the Year conversation this season, and under him, every Boston player, including the deeper rotation pieces, works hard for the team. But in this series against the 76ers, Joe has already watched his team suffer two frustrating losses after building 13-point leads.

Game 5 brought even more criticism. The Celtics missed their final 14 shots, one of the worst late-game shooting collapses in the NBA since 2005. Tatum and Brown were solid, combining for 46 points on 17-of-42 shooting, 21 rebounds, and nine assists. But they did not get enough help from key supporting players Vucevic, White, and Pritchard, who combined for 26 points on 10-of-24 shooting. Pritchard deserves slightly less criticism, as he has had only one truly poor game this postseason, when he scored four points.

Note: Bench guard Payton Pritchard has scored at least 12 points in four of five games against Philadelphia.

Predicted Lineup

Boston: White — Brown, Hauser — Tatum, Queta

Out: —

Manager: Joe Mazzulla

Philadelphia Has Been More Comfortable Away From Home

Since the start of the season, Boston leads the head-to-head matchup 5-4. Interestingly, the 76ers have lost three of four home games but have won three of five meetings in Boston.

Philadelphia vs Boston Prediction: Boston -5.5 at 1.89

Main pick: It would be premature to say Philadelphia has taken control of the series. Embiid is still a major physical question, and his playoff career has included more than a few difficult games. Maxey is also shooting only 43.2% from the field this postseason. It is hard to expect another collapse from a more experienced and more complete Celtics team that has mostly been beating itself. In Game 4, for example, Embiid and Maxey combined for 48 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists, but that meant little in a 128-96 loss when Boston played at its usual level. Mazzulla should be able to get the right response from his team, so Boston -5.5 at 1.89 is the preferred pick.

Total pick: Game 6 should be tense. The 76ers do not want their season to end, while the Celtics want to close the series and earn extra rest before the next round. The low-scoring trend remains relevant for Philadelphia, which has scored 102 points or fewer in five of the last seven head-to-head meetings. Boston’s last four wins in this matchup were built on elite defense, with Embiid and company held to 102 points or fewer each time. Philadelphia team total under 103.5 at 1.85 is a solid option.

Higher-odds pick: In the last two games, the third quarter was the highest-scoring period. Each team won one of those quarters, and both showed clear second-half urgency. A higher-odds option is highest-scoring quarter: third at 3.10.
