Feyenoord Rotterdam vs Atalanta 2 August 2026 Prediction
Feyenoord will complete its preseason schedule with a friendly against Atalanta, which is beginning a new era under Maurizio Sarri. The Rotterdam club has won only one of its previous seven meetings with Serie A opposition.
Feyenoord Has Looked Better in Attack Than in Defense
Feyenoord finished second in the Eredivisie and qualified for the Champions League last season but still parted ways with Robin van Persie. Club legend Giovanni van Bronckhorst has returned as manager after previously leading the team from 2015 to 2019 and winning the league title. The new Eredivisie season begins next week, so Feyenoord started its preparations much earlier than Atalanta and has won all four of its friendlies.
Those victories include a 3-1 win over reigning Belgian champion Club Brugge and a 2-1 result against 2025/26 Conference League finalist Rayo Vallecano in a match played over four 30-minute periods. Despite extensive rotation and the involvement of several young players, Feyenoord has produced effective counterattacking soccer. The team has also shown strong fitness, scoring six goals after the 75th minute.
Feyenoord has been less reliable defensively and has conceded in each of its last three friendlies. Four defenders and defensive midfielder Jakub Moder are currently injured. Belgian midfielder Charles Vanhoutte, signed from Nice, has struggled to replace Moder effectively. Former Las Palmas center back Mika Mármol has contributed more in possession than in defensive situations. New striker Nacho Ferri has also had a quiet start and has yet to record a goal or assist.
Atalanta Is Making a Major Tactical Change
Raffaele Palladino helped Atalanta recover from the problems created under Ivan Jurić and secured a place in the Conference League. The club still decided to appoint the experienced Maurizio Sarri during the summer. His arrival marks the end of the man-oriented pressing system developed over several years by Gian Piero Gasperini. Sarri prefers a possession-based approach built around drawing opponents forward and creating movement through quick passing.
Excluding a 2-1 match against its reserve team, Atalanta has played only one friendly under Sarri, defeating newly promoted Serie B club Arezzo 3-2. The manager used two different lineups, one in each half, and is likely to follow the same approach against Feyenoord. The substitutes performed much better than the starters against Arezzo, overturning a two-goal deficit after halftime.
Atalanta has also been quiet in the transfer market. Its only signing so far is central midfielder Gianluca Gaetano, a Napoli academy graduate who has spent much of his career on loan. He is unlikely to be more than a rotation option. His direct competitor, Éderson, rejected a possible move to Manchester United and instead extended his contract with Atalanta, which has been the club’s most important news of the summer.

Feyenoord vs Atalanta Prediction: Feyenoord Double Chance
- Main prediction: Feyenoord appears to be undervalued in this matchup. The hosts are in better physical condition because their competitive season begins next week. Several of Atalanta’s regular starters looked short of fitness during the first half against Arezzo. Van Bronckhorst’s direct counterattacking system has also worked well throughout Feyenoord’s preseason, while Sarri will need more time to implement a completely different style in Bergamo. The pick is Feyenoord double chance at 1.82.
- Total prediction: Feyenoord’s summer matches have been open and productive, with at least four goals scored in three of its four friendlies. Atalanta’s first game against outside opposition under Sarri produced five goals. Both teams are still adjusting defensively, which should create chances at both ends. The pick is over 3.5 total goals at 2.48.
