Spain vs Cape Verde 15 June 2026 Prediction
The Euro 2024 winners begin their campaign against Cape Verde, a World Cup debutant. First appearances at the tournament often end badly for African teams: seven of the last 10 newcomers lost their opening match. Will this case be different?
Spain Relies on Control and Yamal
Spain went through qualifying confidently, winning five of six matches with a 21-2 goal difference. The team consistently outperformed Georgia, Turkey, and Bulgaria in expected goals, averaging 3.38 xG per game, while its actual scoring rate of 3.5 goals per match fully matched the quality of chances created. Defensively, Spain was also excellent, allowing only 0.38 xGA per match on average.
As part of its World Cup preparation, Luis de la Fuente’s team played four matches. Spain earned routine wins over Peru (3-1) and Serbia (3-0), but unexpectedly drew with Iraq (1-1) and Egypt (0-0). Those results were largely influenced by lineup experiments. Spain still had the edge in both games, posting 1.42 and 2.27 xG, but could not finish its chances. The defense remained strong in friendlies as well: compared to qualifying, only the match against Peru produced a noticeably higher xGA number at 1.37.
Against an African underdog, Spain will likely focus on total control of possession. The team should try to break down a low block through quick short passing and winger movement inside. Rodri, who has 62 caps and four goals for the national team, will be central to the midfield structure. Yamal (25 caps, six goals) and Williams (30 caps, six goals) have recovered from injuries, but the manager may protect them for matches against stronger opponents. In that case, Torres of Barcelona (57 caps, 24 goals) and Baena of Atlético (17 caps, two goals) could replace them against Cape Verde. Spain’s individual quality is high enough to handle this opponent even without some key players.
World Cup Debutant
Cape Verde was the biggest surprise of African qualifying. With a fairly average and experienced squad, the team won a group that included a much more star-studded Cameroon side. Bubista’s team is built around defense, and apart from a heavy away loss to Cameroon (1-4) and a high-scoring draw with Libya (3-3), there were no major defensive failures. Against Cameroon, the team was clearly outmatched tactically, while the goals against Libya were largely the result of poor goalkeeping. Across qualifying, Cape Verde conceded fewer than one goal per game on average (0.8).
Before the World Cup, the manager has continued to rely on the old core that secured qualification. Interestingly, there is not a single player in the squad who plays domestically. Bubista’s preferred setup is a defensive 4-2-3-1 with 40-year-old Vozinha, who has 88 national-team caps, in goal. Cape Verde tested this approach in recent friendlies against Serbia (3-0) and Bermuda (3-0). The team will look to build counterattacks through right winger and captain Mendes, who has 96 caps and 22 goals.
Against the favorite, Cape Verde will likely use a compact low block, relying on quick vertical counters and set pieces. The team will not try to dominate possession, but instead will look to punish Spain for mistakes when building out from the back. The main issue is the lack of experience at this level for many players who compete in mid-tier leagues. Another concern is Villarreal center back Logan Costa, who has lost match sharpness after playing only one match last season because of an ACL injury. Under Spain’s pressure and with fatigue increasing in the second half, Cape Verde’s defensive structure may struggle to hold up.

Spain vs Cape Verde Prediction: Spain Handicap -2.5
- Main prediction: The match will be played in Atlanta at a stadium with a retractable roof and controlled climate, so heat should not affect the players. We expect Spain to win comfortably. In a World Cup match, de la Fuente’s team should be fully focused on converting chances, and its qualifying numbers were strong at 3.5 goals per game. Cape Verde will try to avoid a heavy defeat, but the 1-4 qualifying loss to Cameroon showed how difficult this team can find it against stronger opponents. The pick is Spain handicap (-2.5) at 1.90. A riskier option is correct score 4-0.
- Total prediction: Spain has consistently outperformed opponents in chance creation in recent official matches. At the same time, de la Fuente’s defense has maintained a high level even in friendlies, making Spain very difficult to score against. Spain also has enough attacking quality to score four goals on its own, as it is one of the main title contenders by potential. Cape Verde’s defense is vulnerable because of the limited level of individual quality. The manager may have to start Costa at center back despite his lack of match practice after playing only one game last season. The pick is over 3.5 goals at 1.93.
