Andrey Rublev vs Hubert Hurkacz 16 June 2026 Prediction
The opening round of the tournament in Halle immediately gives fans a strong matchup. Rublev and Hurkacz will meet for a place in the Round of 16. Both have reached the final here twice before, and the Polish player won the title in 2022. Which of these well-known players is better prepared for the match?
Surface speed: 8/10
Andrey Rublev
The Russian has been his usual consistent self, even if his tennis has not always been especially impressive. In the first part of the season, he reached the final of the ATP 500 event in Barcelona and made three more semifinals at other tournaments. From No. 13 in the rankings, Rublev is well positioned to push for a return to the top 10.
Andrey does not usually experiment much with his game. He relies on what has worked throughout his career: holding serve and hitting hard from the forehand side. His season stats are not outstanding, but they are solid both on serve and return. The Russian wins 31.4% of points on opponents’ first serves and 25% of return games, which are good numbers.
Rublev still does not have a grass-court title. However, he can clearly play on the surface: he is 35-17 on grass in his career, with his biggest results including finals in Halle in 2021 and 2023 and a Wimbledon quarterfinal in 2023.
Hubert Hurkacz
Last year, during the grass swing, Hurkacz suffered a knee injury and underwent surgery. Since then, his results have been understandably inconsistent. This season, the Polish player is 9-12 at main-tour level and is only No. 96 in the rankings. On the other hand, he has beaten strong opponents such as Zverev and Darderi.
Hubert has not yet returned to anything close to his peak level. His serve is still strong enough, but his return game is a clear weakness. This season’s numbers are poor: only 11.6% of return games won, 26.4% of points won on opponents’ first serves, and 43% on opponents’ second serves. He often reaches tiebreaks, but has not been making the most of them. Hurkacz has the third-most lost tiebreaks this year with 12. He averages roughly one ace per game.
With a reliable serve and strong net play, the Polish player is naturally well suited to grass. He has won 64% of his career matches on this surface, going 30-17, and reached the Wimbledon semifinal in 2021.
Tournament History
- The Russian has played the Halle event eight times. Since the 2021 season, Andrey has appeared here every year. He reached the title match in both 2021 and 2023, but lost both finals.
- Like Rublev, Hurkacz has twice reached the final at this tournament. Unlike Rublev, he went one step further and won the title in 2022.
Andrey Rublev vs Hubert Hurkacz Prediction: Rublev to Win at 1.76
- Main prediction: Hurkacz is always dangerous on grass, but his overall form is clearly worse than Rublev’s. This season, the Polish player has a negative 13-14 record, and four of those wins came at Challenger level. Last week, Hubert lost in the first round in 's-Hertogenbosch to Hungary’s Fucsovics (6-3, 6-7, 6-7), who is also having a weak season at 7-12. Rublev, meanwhile, has won 67% of his matches this year and has one final plus two more semifinals at main-tour events. He has not played on grass yet this season, but last year he won four of six matches on the surface. It makes sense to take Rublev to win at 1.76.
- Total prediction: At the same time, the favorite should not expect an easy match. Almost all of Rublev and Hurkacz’s previous meetings were competitive. In four of their six matches, both players won at least one set, and five of those matches included a tiebreak. Hurkacz is still reaching tiebreaks often even while below his best: his last five matches have featured seven tiebreaks. We again expect a close match, especially because these courts suit both players. Our pick is over 23.5 games at 1.79.
