Belgium vs Senegal 1 July 2026 Prediction
Senegal has not advanced past the first knockout round since 2002, when current manager Pape Thiaw was still playing for the national team. This time, the opponent is Belgium, a top-10 team in the FIFA ranking. Still, Belgium’s third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup remains its only major achievement of the 21st century. The winner of this matchup is likely to face the United States in the round of 16, unless Bosnia and Herzegovina pulls off an upset.
Belgium Still Struggles Against Low Blocks
Despite entering Group G as the clear favorite, Belgium secured its place in the knockout round only on the final matchday. The underlying numbers improved from game to game: Belgium increased its chance creation from 1.07 to 3.62 xG and reduced its opponents’ output from 1.07 to 0.2 xGA. But that had a lot to do with the level of opposition: Egypt (1-1), Iran (0-0), and New Zealand (5-1). Senegal will be a stronger opponent than any of those three teams.
The Red Devils usually control possession, but they continue to struggle against well-organized low blocks. That issue has shown up not only in tournament play, but also in qualifying matches against North Macedonia, which ended 1-1 and 0-0. In these games, Belgium moves the ball too slowly in the final third, which often leads to low-scoring draws. Senegal’s fast counterattacks can also cause problems, and they are at least as dangerous as Egypt’s transitions. Belgium’s slower central midfielders do not always cover space quickly enough after turnovers. A potential round-of-16 match against the United States would create similar problems, but with even more pace in transition.
The main lineup question is at center forward. Romelu Lukaku could be useful against Senegal’s physical center backs, but his form is not ideal. Belgium scored in two World Cup matches with Lukaku involved, but both times he came on after halftime. When he started against Iran, he had a poor game. Charles De Ketelaere is therefore expected to start, with the Napoli forward likely used again as an impact substitute. The most logical change from the New Zealand match is the return of Amadou Onana as a true holding midfielder. Against Senegal’s athletic midfield, he fits the matchup better than the more attack-minded Hans Vanaken.
Senegal Has a Clear Counterattacking Threat
Unlike Belgium, Senegal had a difficult group draw with France (1-3), one of the tournament favorites, and an improving Norway side (2-3). Even so, Pape Thiaw’s team competed well, averaging 1.15 xG for and 1.97 xG against. Senegal reached the knockout round in the final match by building the required goal difference against Iraq (5-0). Despite organizational issues, including strict checks on arrival in the United States, uncertainty over the manager’s contract, and player complaints about food and hotel conditions, Senegal became the only three-point team to advance from third place to the round of 32.
Senegal’s biggest weapon is its quick transition from defense to attack. That should work better against a slower Belgium side than it did against France and Norway. Belgium wants to dominate possession, press high, and control the ball, but it leaves space behind when it loses possession in the opposition half. Senegal has already shown that it can score when given room to break. The African side should be comfortable defending deep and waiting for counterattacking chances. If Senegal advances, a likely meeting with the United States would require a more complex game plan.
Thiaw used a rotated lineup against Iraq, but the strongest and most experienced players are expected to return for the knockout stage. Nicolas Jackson should replace young Ibrahim Mbaye in the front three. He will compete for long passes from deep, pull defenders toward him, and lay the ball off for wide forwards attacking space. Key center back Kalidou Koulibaly should also return to the starting lineup to organize the defense against Charles De Ketelaere and, later, Romelu Lukaku. The absence of first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy could have been a major concern for Senegal, but backup Mory Diaw kept a clean sheet in the final group match and looked reliable.

Belgium vs Senegal Prediction: Senegal to Avoid Defeat
- Main prediction: Senegal had to work hard to reach the round of 32, but this matchup is one of the more favorable options it could have drawn. Belgium finished first in its group, yet its slow positional attack was not convincing. Belgium scored its first goals of the tournament only when limited New Zealand chose to play open soccer against it. Against Egypt, Belgium’s goal came from an own goal.
- If Senegal applies the defensive model that worked well at the last continental tournament, Belgium should have problems. Senegal’s counterattacks, already visible throughout this World Cup, can make the matchup even more difficult for the favorite. Belgium has also struggled against strong African teams, failing to win any of its last four matches against African sides from the top 40 of the FIFA ranking. The pick is Senegal to avoid defeat at 1.69 and correct score 1-2 at 12.25.
- Goals prediction: Both teams have enough attacking quality to score. Senegal found the net in all three of its World Cup matches, including against France. Belgium failed to score against Iran, but still created enough chances in that game, finishing with 1.76 xG. A good secondary pick is both teams to score - yes at 1.90.
