Luxembourg vs Italy 3 June 2026 Prediction
Italy was the only national team from the top 15 of the FIFA rankings that failed to qualify for the North American World Cup, but it has not lost a friendly since November 2022. The Azzurri have also never lost to Luxembourg, winning seven of the previous eight head-to-head meetings.
Without Their Best Player
Over the past 10 years, Luxembourg has improved significantly compared with many traditional underdogs, as shown again by two confident wins over Malta in March (2-0 and 3-0). However, the hosts still struggle to compete with stronger teams, which was clear from their poor World Cup qualifying campaign. Drawn against Germany (0-4 and 0-2), Slovakia (0-1 and 0-2), and Northern Ireland (1-3 and 0-1), they failed badly again and finished with zero points from six matches.
Luxembourg manager Jeff Strasser always has a very limited pool of high-quality players. In terms of individual level, the hosts are weaker than even Italy’s youth squad in almost every position. That makes the absence of their main star, Benfica midfielder Leandro Barreiro, even more significant, as he asked to be rested for the June friendlies. The Red Lions have lost each of their last nine matches of varying importance without the 26-year-old central midfielder.
A Chance for Young Players
After another failed World Cup qualifying campaign, Italy is starting over and does not even have a permanent manager yet. In the upcoming friendlies, the Azzurri will be led by interim manager Silvio Baldini, who has named a squad that can hardly even be called second-choice. The 67-year-old has used this camp as a real test for inexperienced young players: 88% of the squad has not played a single minute for the national team. The only experienced player in the current squad is Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Even so, this unusual Italy side should be strong enough against Luxembourg. The opponent does not have players of the level of Marco Palestra, Francesco Pio Esposito, or Nicolo Pisilli. In addition, Italy has not slipped up in its last 10 matches against teams close to Luxembourg’s level, including three games each against Estonia and Moldova, plus two each against Malta and Lithuania. The Azzurri won all 10. In every one of those matches, they won by at least two goals.

Luxembourg vs Italy Prediction: Italy to Win With a (-1.5) Handicap at 2.54
- Main prediction: By choosing to test young players, Silvio Baldini has helped push up the odds on Italy. However, it is still unlikely that the hosts will be able to take advantage of Italy’s lack of chemistry. Without their leader Leandro Barreiro, Luxembourg look like a fairly limited team with a static midfield, where Christopher Martins is now expected to play a leading role despite not being in his best form and not starting for Spartak since April 26. Their record against top-15 FIFA-ranked teams also offers little encouragement. In each of their last 10 matches against opponents from that group, the Red Lions have lost, and every defeat came by at least two goals. The recommended pick is Italy to win with a (-1.5) handicap at 2.54. A higher-risk option is correct score 3-1 to Italy at 14.50.
- Goals prediction: The hosts are still capable of scoring against Gianluigi Donnarumma. Italy’s defensive line has never played together in this combination, while Luxembourg has averaged exactly one home goal per match under the current manager. For an additional bet, the preferred option is both teams to score — yes at 2.09.
