Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina 12 June 2026 Prediction

The World Cup has reached Canada. However, not everyone will be able to take part in the host nation’s opening match: Canada will be without its biggest star, Alphonso Davies. The hosts will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are unbeaten in six straight away matches.

Canada Are Unbeaten Against European Teams

As World Cup hosts, the Reds prepared for the tournament through friendly matches and enter it on an eight-game unbeaten run with three wins and five draws. Jesse Marsch’s team most often tested themselves against European opponents. Last fall, they beat Romania away (3:0) and Wales (1:0), while in their two most recent camps they drew with Iceland (2:2) and Ireland (1:1).

Those four matches are especially relevant, as the level of opposition was close to what Canada will face here. Still, a friendly and a World Cup match are not the same thing. In those games, Canada averaged 1.75 goals scored while producing 1.47 expected goals (xG), so finishing has not been a major issue. Defensively, the team allowed three goals from 4.08 xGA, and that was not mainly due to goalkeeping. Most opponents simply lacked composure in the final third.

Canada’s attack looks dangerous. Alongside Jonathan David, the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 39 goals, Kyle Larin could start after a strong finish to the season with Southampton, where he recorded 7 goals and 1 assist in 13 matches. Athletic forwards Promise David and Tani Oluwaseyi are also options. Davies was expected to supply them from wide areas, but Canada do not want to risk his health yet. The captain has been recovering from a hamstring injury since early May and is still training individually. Experienced and versatile Richie Laryea should replace him. Starting center back Moise Bombito is also not in top form. Since last year, 20-year-old Luc de Fougerolles has been getting minutes in that position. Canada averaged 58.2% possession across their last five matches, so they are likely to take the initiative here as well.

The Visitors Are Ready to Play Without the Ball

Bosnia and Herzegovina have qualified for the World Cup for the second time in their history. They finished second in their qualifying group, just two points behind the more established Austria. Their playoff path was dramatic: first, the Blue and Yellows eliminated Wales away from home, then celebrated a surprise win over Italy with their fans. Both ties were decided on penalties after 1:1 draws in regulation time.

During their spring and summer camp, Sergej Barbarez’s team tried to work on less familiar scenarios where they had to control the game. They did not manage to beat North Macedonia (1:1) or Panama (1:1). Bosnia are more effective on the counterattack. In qualifying away matches, excluding the game against a modest San Marino side that also went down to 10 men early, Bosnia averaged only 34.5% possession and exactly one goal scored, despite producing 0.78 xG. Bosnia do not need clear-cut chances to punish opponents. Across all matches, including friendlies, the team is unbeaten in six straight away games.

All of Bosnia’s strongest players made the squad. Even though Haris Tabakovic is almost certain to miss the first two matches because of his physical condition, he was kept in the squad. The striker scored in four of his last five national-team matches, so his absence will matter. Still, Bosnia should have Ermedin Demirovic and Edin Dzeko up front, with the pair involved in 8 of Bosnia’s 19 goals during qualifying. The wide areas also look dangerous, with the quick Amar Dedic, Esmir Bajraktarevic, and Kerim Alajbegovic supported by the experienced Sead Kolasinac.

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Predicted Lineup

Canada (4-4-2): Crepeau – Johnston, de Fougerolles, Cornelius, Laryea – Buchanan, Eustaquio, Kone, Millar – David, Larin

Out: Davies (injury), Miller, Shaffelburg (both not in the squad)

Manager: Jesse Marsch

Bosnia and Herzegovina (4-4-2): Vasilj – Dedic, Katic, Muharemovic, Kolasinac – Bajraktarevic, Basic, Tahirovic, Memic – Demirovic, Dzeko

Out: Tabakovic (injury)

Manager: Sergej Barbarez

Referee: Facundo Tello (Argentina)

At club level in Argentina, this referee often uses a strict style, but his international matches have been different. Across South American World Cup 2026 qualifying, Euro 2024, and the 2022 World Cup, the Argentine referee has averaged only 3.38 yellow cards and has shown just one red card in 13 matches.

Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Prediction

  • Main Prediction: Both teams enter this match on eight-game unbeaten runs. However, Canada built theirs mostly in home friendlies, while Bosnia and Herzegovina did so mostly in official matches where a World Cup spot was at stake. Davies’ absence also raises questions about the hosts. Canada will likely have more of the ball, but that should suit Barbarez’s team, who did not lose away in this style during qualifying. We suggest betting on Bosnia and Herzegovina not to lose at 2.05, with 1:1 as a correct score option at 6.50.
  • Total Prediction: This match is important in the battle for at least second place in the group, so both teams should focus on reducing risk, especially with games against group favorite Switzerland still ahead. Matches involving these teams have also not been high-scoring: fewer than 3 goals were scored in 9 of Canada’s last 10 matches, while the same bet has landed in 5 straight Bosnia and Herzegovina games. Neither team faced many clearly weaker opponents in that stretch. We are taking under 2.5 goals at 1.70.
