Germany vs Curacao 14 June 2026 Prediction
The four-time world champions open their World Cup campaign against Curaçao, a debutant and the smallest nation in tournament history. There are two main questions: how big Germany’s winning margin will be, and whether the nominal visitors can score against Manuel Neuer, who has returned to the international stage.
Germany Is Looking for a 10th Straight Win
Germany enters this match on a nine-game winning streak. After a poor 2-0 loss to Slovakia in the opening round of World Cup qualifying, the team has not slipped up again. The response against Slovakia was convincing: a 6-0 win. Across the entire qualifying campaign, Julian Nagelsmann’s team scored 15 goals, averaging 2.5 per match, almost exactly matching its expected goals average of 2.53 xG. Germany’s attacking efficiency has been strong.
The friendlies were mainly used to prepare for matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador rather than Curaçao, as Germany faced solid opponents such as Switzerland (4-3), Ghana (2-1), Finland (4-0), and the United States (2-1). Germany kept only one clean sheet, despite allowing an average of just 0.67 xGA. Goalkeepers Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel did not always help, but at the World Cup they should give way to 40-year-old Neuer, who agreed to return to the national team for one more major tournament.
Neuer did not play in the friendlies because he was recovering from a calf injury. Everything suggests that he has fully recovered, and the coaching staff is ready to start him immediately. Lennart Karl had been tested on the right side of the attack and had a real chance to become one of the breakout players of the tournament, but he suffered a muscle fiber tear during camp and was withdrawn from the squad. That gives experienced Leroy Sané, who has 76 caps and 17 goals for Germany, a chance to secure a starting role. Still, the main attacking focus will be on the Musiala-Wirtz-Havertz trio, which can create problems for any opponent.
Curaçao Was One of the Biggest Qualifying Surprises
Dick Advocaat’s team had an excellent qualifying campaign and did not lose a single match. However, some luck was involved. Curaçao lost the xG battle in every head-to-head match against its main rivals, Trinidad and Tobago (0-0, 1-1) and Jamaica (2-0, 0-0), with a combined xG of 3.07 to 5.42. The finishing was efficient, while goalkeeper Eloy Room had to make several important saves. To be fair, the opponents also wasted plenty of chances.
Curaçao rarely faces teams at Germany’s level. The game model will clearly be different from what we saw in World Cup qualifying. The recent friendly against Scotland (1-4) can be viewed as a rehearsal, but it is difficult to evaluate fairly because Curaçao played more than a half with 10 men. Still, that match was used to test a more defensive 5-4-1 setup instead of the usual 4-3-3. Something similar is likely here.
There were no major surprises in the squad. Rangelo Janga, the country’s all-time leading scorer with 21 goals, was not called up, but he has not been a key option under Advocaat. Jürgen Locadia and Gervane Kastaneer are competing for the center-forward spot. Locadia is more likely to start, as he plays for Miami in the U.S. second tier and should adapt more easily to the conditions in Houston, where the match will be played. The key players in the squad are the Bacuna brothers and Tahith Chong, who have experience in the English Championship and the Dutch top division.
Germany vs Curaçao Predicted Lineup
Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer – Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Brown – Pavlović, Nmecha – Sané, Musiala, Wirtz – Havertz
Will Not Play: Karl, Gnabry, Kleindienst (all injured), Andrich, Baku, Mittelstädt, Stach, Adeyemi, Führich (all not in the squad)
Manager: Julian Nagelsmann
Curaçao (5-4-1): Room – Floranus, Gaari, Bazoer, Obispo, Fonville – Chong, Comenencia, L. Bacuna, J. Bacuna – Locadia
Will Not Play: Janga (not in the squad)
Manager: Dick Advocaat
Referee: Jalal Jayed (Morocco)
This will be the first match involving non-African teams in this referee’s career. Jayed usually calls a high number of fouls but does not show cards too often: across his last 20 national-team matches, he has averaged 29.25 fouls and 3.45 yellow cards per game.
Germany vs Curaçao Prediction: Germany Handicap -3.5
- Main prediction: Despite its nine-game winning streak, Germany is not viewed as one of the top favorites at this tournament. That makes it important to start strongly in the opening round. The team may also want to build an early advantage in goal difference. In four of Germany’s last 11 wins, the margin was at least four goals. Those results came against Hungary (5-0), Bosnia and Herzegovina (7-0), Luxembourg (4-0), and Slovakia (6-0), all of whom are more experienced and established than Curaçao. Advocaat’s team suffered heavy spring defeats to Australia (1-5) and Scotland (1-4), and Germany is an even tougher test. The pick is Germany handicap (-3.5) at 2.00 and correct score 4-0 at 7.00.
- Total prediction: At the same time, under Nagelsmann, Germany has produced its biggest five-goal-plus wins only at home. A neutral venue makes the task more difficult, especially with the match scheduled for 12:00 local time in hot conditions. Rain is also expected, which can make breaking down a low block harder. Germany conceded only three goals during qualifying, and Neuer’s return should make the defense more confident. Curaçao conceded four against Scotland while playing with 10 men, and the Australia match came with a rotated squad and without Advocaat on the bench. The nominal visitors should be capable of avoiding an extremely heavy defeat. The pick is under 4.5 goals at 1.75.
