Two established Serie A mid-table teams meet in the final match of Matchday 6. Udinese beat Torino twice last season, 2-1 and 2-0. This time, Udinese manager Kosta Runjaic faces Torino’s new manager, Ignazio Abate.

Abate Has Struggled

Torino beat Fabio Grosso’s struggling Fiorentina 2-1, but that is their only win under Abate. They have taken just one point from their other four Serie A matches. Their performances offer little evidence of an imminent improvement: Torino ranks fifth from the bottom in expected points (xPts). Even in the 1-1 draw with Bologna, Torino needed a mistake from goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski to avoid defeat. Club president Urbano Cairo may soon consider another change of manager.

Backup goalkeeper Franco Israel is Torino’s only confirmed injury absence. International duty, however, may have taken a toll. Torino players logged 1,944 minutes for their national teams during the break. Only players from Milan (2,624), Atalanta (2,427), Inter (2,343) and Napoli (2,094) played more.

The Break Could Help Udinese

Udinese has been in Serie A since the 1990s and is again competing in mid-table. They opened with a 1-1 draw against Champions League side Como and a 3-2 win over Monza. Their fitness levels then dipped, contributing to defeats against Lazio (2-1), Inter (5-3) and Cagliari (1-0). The extended international break gave Runjaic time to work on his squad’s conditioning.

Injuries to Nicolo Zaniolo and Idrissa Gueye leave Unai Gomes, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Keinan Davis as Udinese’s likely attacking trio. Udinese has also signed David Alaba as a free agent. The Austrian defender still needs to build match fitness, so he is unlikely to start in Turin.

Main prediction: Neither team has been in good form, but Udinese has a better chance of improving quickly. Runjaic has had three weeks to address the fitness issues affecting his team’s pressing. Udinese also created enough chances to beat Cagliari despite losing 1-0, leading 2.15 to 1.12 in expected goals (xG). Torino, meanwhile, has yet to earn a point at home under Abate. Udinese to win or draw at 1.63 is the safer option, but the main pick is Udinese to win at 3.26.
