Bournemouth vs Liverpool 20 September 2026 Prediction
Andoni Iraola took Bournemouth to a new level during his time at the club. The Basque manager now returns to the Vitality Stadium in charge of Liverpool. Can Iraola capitalize on his knowledge of his former team, or will Bournemouth get the better of their former manager?
Bournemouth: Second-Half Problems
Bournemouth have secured the first European win in club history. Their Europa League debut ended in a hard-fought 2-1 road victory over Real Sociedad in San Sebastian. The game followed a familiar pattern for Marco Rose’s side. Bournemouth made an aggressive start and led by two goals after 20 minutes, but their performance dropped off afterward. Real Sociedad failed to complete the comeback, but the underlying issue remains: Bournemouth continue to produce two very different halves and often lose control late in games.
Excluding the comfortable 4-0 League Cup win over lower-level Lincoln, Bournemouth’s other matches highlight the imbalance between their first- and second-half performances. The Cherries have scored seven of their eight Premier League and Europa League goals before halftime. The trend is reversed defensively, with six goals conceded after halftime and only two in the opening 45 minutes. Bournemouth may be becoming too conservative after taking an early lead, and that approach has not worked consistently.
Liverpool: Adjusting to a New System
Liverpool are unbeaten through their first six matches of the season, but the results have not been entirely convincing. The Reds have won only three of those games: 2-0 against Ipswich, 3-1 against an out-of-form Tottenham side in the League Cup, and 2-1 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Their Premier League form has been less impressive. A 2-2 road draw with Newcastle was understandable, but dropping points at Anfield against Nottingham Forest in a 2-2 draw and Fulham in a scoreless draw was more concerning.
Andoni Iraola’s approach differs from the systems previously used at Liverpool. The Reds have traditionally dominated possession and patiently worked to break down opposing defenses. Under Iraola, Liverpool are more willing to concede possession, as they did against Tottenham and Atletico Madrid. His system emphasizes vertical attacks, quick progression through the lines, and aggressive counterpressing after turnovers. It can wear opponents down, but Liverpool are still adapting and have occasionally left themselves vulnerable to counterattacks.

Bournemouth vs Liverpool Prediction: Liverpool to Win
Main prediction: Liverpool have several important advantages heading into this match. Iraola knows Bournemouth’s strengths and weaknesses from his time at the club. The visitors should also be fresher. Liverpool played their previous match two days earlier and rotated much of their lineup, while Bournemouth fielded a first-choice team against Real Sociedad. Bournemouth’s tendency to fade after halftime could be decisive against a Liverpool side that improves late in games. Seven of the Reds’ 11 goals this season have come in the second half. Liverpool have also won six of the last seven head-to-head meetings. The main selection is Liverpool to win at 2.17.
Totals prediction: Bournemouth showed their attacking potential during preseason, including a 10-1 win over Genoa. Their scoring rate has declined in competitive play, but Marco Rose’s team have still scored at least twice in each of their last four matches. Liverpool have also scored two or more goals in five of their first six games this season. The secondary selection is over 3.5 goals at 2.27.
