Mexico are finishing their World Cup preparation in good shape. At the press conference, manager Javier Aguirre said the lineup against Serbia would be very close to full strength. At first glance, that looks strong, but four of those goals came in an unusually productive game against Iceland (4-0), where Mexico produced 4.61 xG. Over this stretch, their average xG is 1.64, which is close to their average goals scored (1.6), so the team has been efficient with the chances it creates.

One Setback After Another

Serbia had a poor World Cup qualifying campaign. In a group with England, challenging for first place was unrealistic, but the visitors fought hard with Albania for second. Paunovic’s team lost that battle. Serbia’s 1-0 home defeat in Belgrade proved decisive, while the return match ended 0-0. After missing out on the World Cup, Serbia decided to move toward a younger squad. As a result, veterans Mitrovic, Vlahovic, and Gudelj were left out.

However, the focus on the new generation has not worked yet, as Serbia were beaten 3-0 by Cape Verde in their last friendly.
