Russia vs Burkina Faso 5 June 2026 Prediction

Valery Karpin’s team returns to its home stadium after an unsuccessful trip to Cairo. The Russian national team now faces a difficult and physically strong African opponent in Burkina Faso. Russia need to respond after their previous defeat, but Burkina Faso have arrived in Volgograd with a competitive squad and are ready to make this a serious test.

Squad Absences During a Poor Run

After an impressive 23-match unbeaten streak, Russia have started to decline: a 2-0 loss to Chile at the end of the autumn cycle, an unconvincing 3-1 win over modest Nicaragua, a flat 0-0 draw with Mali, and a limited attacking performance in a 1-0 loss to Egypt. Overall, Russia have only one win in their last four matches, and that result does not carry much weight. They also failed to score in three games during this stretch. Recent results against African teams are also not especially encouraging in the context of this matchup. In addition to the games mentioned above, there were matches against Nigeria (1-1), Kenya (2-2), and Zambia (5-0). That means only one win, and it came against Zambia’s second-string squad.

Karpin’s regular experiments have left Russia without a stable core, which has affected team chemistry and chance creation. Against Egypt, Russia had only one shot on target and deservedly lost, even though Egypt were without their main star, Mohamed Salah. The squad situation adds more concern. Starting goalkeeper Safonov has been given rest after winning the Champions League, while Osipenko and Denisov are out injured. The attack has also taken a serious hit. Karpin is without two left-sided runners, Kirill Glebov and Sadulaev, as well as creative midfielder Golovin and Vorobyev.

These absences make it difficult to change the lineup significantly compared with the Egypt match and improve the team’s quality, although several adjustments look likely. Given the shortage of left wingers, we expect young Manchester United player Amir Ibragimov to make his debut, while Tyukavin, who has returned from injury, should start up front. Agkatsev, Glushenkov, and Silyanov played the full match in Cairo and are likely to be rested. Maksimenko is expected to start in goal, Al. Miranchuk should play on the right side of the attack, and Melekhin may replace Silyanov in central defense from the start. Umyarov is also expected to appear in midfield after a strong season with Spartak. He was rested in Cairo after the Russian Cup Super Final.

A Solid African Opponent

Burkina Faso are a typical athletic African team that relies on discipline and defense. Recently, they have looked solid. In 2026 World Cup qualifying, they lost only 1 of 10 matches, recording 6 wins and 3 draws with a 23-8 goal difference. They finished second and were beaten only by a strong Egypt side, with head-to-head results of 0-0 and 1-2. At the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, Burkina Faso reached the round of 16, where they lost 3-0 to a traditionally strong Ivory Coast team.

However, the federation was not satisfied with the lack of major achievements and started a rebuild. The national team was recently taken over by Amir Abdou, a pragmatic manager, as shown by his previous spell in charge of Mauritania. Under him, Burkina Faso played two friendlies against a much weaker Guinea-Bissau side, drawing 1-1 and winning 5-0. Russia are the first strong opponent for this new setup. This is an early test for Abdou’s defensive approach. Burkina Faso rarely play teams from other continents, with only a recent 2-1 loss to Iran standing out, so this is an additional challenge.

Burkina Faso are expected to use a mixed lineup in this match. Starting goalkeeper Herve Koffi, center back Nasser Djiga, and forward Lassina Traore, who has recorded 8 goals and 1 assist in his last 14 national-team matches, are not in the squad. At the same time, five debutants have been called up. Still, this cannot be called a second-string Burkina Faso squad, as the main stars are available: Bayer defender Edmond Tapsoba will lead the back line, while energetic Brentford winger Dango Ouattara, who recorded 7 goals and 3 assists in the 2025/26 Premier League season, will be a key counterattacking threat.

Russia vs Burkina Faso Prediction: Burkina Faso +1.5 Handicap at 1.90

  • Main prediction: Russia have only one win in their last five matches and failed to score in three of their last four games. Karpin’s experiments have prevented the team from building a clear core, which has affected quality, and now several creative players are also unavailable, including Golovin and Vorobyev. Given those absences, Russia may find it difficult to break down a defense led by the high-level Tapsoba. Burkina Faso are a disciplined team, and after the coaching change they are comfortable defending in a low block. Yes, the visitors are not at full strength and are expected to experiment, but most of their key players are available. Bookmakers appear too confident in an easy Russia win. The visitors should stay competitive. We are backing Burkina Faso +1.5 handicap at 1.90.
  • Goals prediction: Four of Russia’s last five matches finished under the total, and Karpin’s team failed to score in three of those games. Given the current attacking issues, it is hard to expect a high-scoring performance from Russia. Burkina Faso also tend to build from defense in matches against stronger opponents. Three of the visitors’ last five matches also finished under the total. Our pick is Under 2.5 goals at 1.85.
