Spain are playing their final home friendly before traveling to the World Cup. One of the tournament favorites has chosen Iraq as a warm-up opponent because Iraq’s defensive style is similar to Spain’s group-stage opponents, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. How will this final preparation match play out?

Spain will take a strong squad to the 2026 World Cup, but not everyone is available yet. Attacking leaders Yamal and Williams will miss the match against Iraq. Iraq have returned to the World Cup after a 40-year absence. Manager Graham Arnold has built a squad mainly from players based in the domestic league, with several foreign-based players added. His team came through a multi-stage Asian qualifying campaign and secured its World Cup place in a playoff against Bolivia, winning 2-1.

We expect Iraq to use its usual approach against Spain, relying on a compact defense and experienced goalkeeper Hasan Jalal. The tactical shape should look like a 5-4-1, with a focus on defending and quick counterattacks. Up front, the visitors are expected to use Ali Al-Hamadi of English club Ipswich. He is the only forward in the squad who plays for a European club.  

Defensive organization and discipline are Iraq’s main strengths. In their last five 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, the visitors conceded 0.6 goals per game on average, while allowing 0.38 xGA. Spain vs Iraq Prediction: Iraq +2.5 Handicap at 2.21

• Main prediction: Spain will control possession and dictate the game, but Iraq should be comfortable with that setup. The visitors have become more organized under their new manager. They will commit many players behind the ball, slow the tempo, and manage the clock when possible. Arnold’s team used a similar plan against Bolivia. In that match, Bolivia had 68% possession but created little danger, finishing with only 0.7 xG. Also, Spain’s coaching staff is unlikely to treat this friendly as a match that must be won by a big margin. According to de la Fuente, the goal is simply to test tactical ideas calmly before the World Cup. That is why our pick is Iraq +2.5 handicap at 2.21. A riskier option is correct score 2-0.
• Total prediction: Spain are unlikely to play at maximum intensity. Their priority is to avoid injuries and prepare calmly for the World Cup.
