France vs Ivory Coast 4 June 2026 Prediction
This matchup will be a contrast of styles. One of the strongest attacking units in the world will face one of Africa’s most reliable defensive teams. The game is also an important part of World Cup preparation for both sides, as France will face Senegal at the tournament, while Ivory Coast will play another top national team, Germany.
France Have Work to Do Before the World Cup
After a strong qualifying campaign with 16 points from six matches, France began its World Cup preparation well by beating Brazil 2-1 and Colombia 3-1 in March. However, those results could have been different, as Didier Deschamps’ team scored more than expected in those games: five goals from 2.59 xG. At the same time, France allowed 3.19 xGA and conceded only two goals. In other words, poor finishing from opponents and strong goalkeeping from France, with seven saves, helped the team avoid bigger problems. Overall, France’s defense still lacks consistency, and without William Saliba, who has started 10 of the national team’s last 16 competitive matches, keeping a clean sheet will be even more difficult.
Choosing Ivory Coast as a friendly opponent makes sense. First, France will begin the World Cup against another African team, Senegal. Second, France has not always been comfortable against African opponents. For example, France lost to Tunisia at the 2022 World Cup, 1-0, and its previous friendlies against Ivory Coast were also competitive: 0-0 and 2-1.
Didier Deschamps is likely to rest the Champions League finalists, especially PSG forwards Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Bradley Barcola. Even with those absences, the manager still has many attacking options, with nine forwards called up for this camp. And with Kylian Mbappe in the squad, the second-highest scorer in France history and a player who recorded five goals and three assists in six World Cup qualifying matches, the home team’s attack remains dangerous.
Ivory Coast Are Looking for Balance
Ivory Coast was one of two African teams to qualify for the World Cup without conceding a goal. Its defense also performed well at the Africa Cup of Nations, allowing only 0.58 xGA on average. The fact that the team conceded 1.2 goals per match in that tournament was more likely the result of poor luck and inconsistent goalkeeping, with only a 57% save rate. The March matches also supported the idea that Ivory Coast are strong defensively: South Korea (4-0) and Scotland (1-0) were both beaten without conceding, even though their opponents produced enough xG to threaten, with 1.07 and 0.92 respectively. Still, Ivory Coast have not faced many world-class opponents lately, so this match against France will be a serious test.
While relying on defense, Ivory Coast are also working to improve their attack. For example, forwards Elye Wahi, who scored nine goals in 19 matches for Nice, and Ange-Yoan Bonny, who scored seven goals this season for Inter, were recently cleared to play for Ivory Coast. Alongside Amad Diallo, who scored three goals in five AFCON matches, the visitors now have a quick and physically strong team that can counterattack and compete in the air.

France vs Ivory Coast Prediction: Ivory Coast +1.5 Handicap at 1.82
- Main prediction: France have won all five matches at Stade de la Beaujoire, but this game should still be competitive. Ivory Coast’s defense is strong enough to keep the margin close, and France may find it difficult to win comfortably without all of its best forwards available. Deschamps’ team has scored at least two goals in 11 straight matches, but a bigger attacking performance is not guaranteed here. France’s recent record against African opponents is also worth noting. We recommend considering Ivory Coast +1.5 handicap at 1.82, as well as correct score 2-1 at 9.00.
- Goals prediction: Defense is not France’s strongest area at the moment. The home team allowed chances not only in the March friendlies, but also in qualifying matches against modest opponents such as Iceland (2-1, 2-2) and Azerbaijan (3-1). Ivory Coast have scored in eight straight matches, and their recent attacking additions increase their chances of finding the net against France. The pick is both teams to score — yes at 1.92.
