Darmstadt enters Matchday 5 with one point after three straight losses without scoring. Arminia has four points, all earned at home, while losing both road games. The meeting at the Böllenfalltor will show which issue is more significant: Darmstadt’s inability to convert attacks or Arminia’s struggles away from Bielefeld.

Darmstadt: Attacking Problems Compounded by Defensive Instability

After opening the season with a 2-2 draw against Holstein Kiel, Florian Kohfeldt’s team lost 1-0 to Dynamo Dresden and Hannover 96 before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Kaiserslautern. Darmstadt finished with 10 men in the first two losses, although the red cards affected those games differently. Kai Klefisch received his second yellow in the 71st minute against Dresden with his team already trailing 1-0, while Aleksandar Vukotić was sent off in the 20th minute against Hannover at 0-0. Darmstadt still created several good chances before halftime. Those three scoreless defeats do not mean the team is completely ineffective in attack.

Darmstadt also had an opportunity to change the game in Kaiserslautern. Noah Weißhaupt won a penalty after a dribbling run, but Lance Duijvestijn hit the crossbar. What followed was more concerning. After conceding shortly before halftime, Darmstadt offered very little going forward. Kohfeldt also criticized his team’s work on second balls, aerial duels, and lack of intensity in one-on-one challenges. That passivity is especially dangerous against an opponent capable of moving the ball forward quickly.

Aleksandar Vukotić will not be available to strengthen the defense. The center back received a two-game suspension and will miss the match against Arminia. Before the previous round, Kohfeldt said the constant changes were preventing him from establishing a settled partnership between his defenders and holding midfielders. The manager will again be without a key part of that unit.

Arminia: Effective at Punishing Mistakes but Too Quick to Drop Back

Oliver Kirch’s team has scored in all four league games: a 2-1 loss to Karlsruher SC, a 3-0 win over Energie Cottbus, a 4-1 defeat to Nürnberg, and a 2-2 draw with St. Pauli. Joel Grodowski already has four goals. The latest draw highlighted both Arminia’s strengths and its limitations. The team took the lead twice but reduced its pressure after scoring, allowing St. Pauli back into the game. Kirch attributed that to his players dropping too deep and called for them to maintain their pressing intensity.

Arminia does not need long spells of possession to create chances. Against St. Pauli, Jannik Rochelt scored the opening goal after a long pass from the goalkeeper and a defensive mistake. The second came from a set piece and Grodowski’s reaction to the second ball. Those situations could cause problems for Darmstadt, whose defending of long balls and loose balls was poor in the previous round. Arminia has weaknesses of its own, however. St. Pauli’s first equalizer came after a turnover in midfield.

Kirch can address those issues without making forced changes. On September 7, the club reported that every player had started the week healthy and was participating in team training. The main question is whether Arminia can remain aggressive after strong spells instead of retreating too close to its own goal.

Arminia has the more reliable attack and the right tools to exploit Darmstadt’s weakened central defense. The visitors can threaten through long balls and set pieces, while Darmstadt faded badly against Kaiserslautern after missing a penalty and conceding shortly before halftime. Arminia’s two road losses and tendency to drop too deep after scoring make an outright win less appealing.
