Lens vs Paris Saint-Germain 16 August 2026 Prediction

It is only August, and PSG is already competing for its second trophy. After winning the UEFA Super Cup, the Parisians are looking to claim the French Super Cup for a record 15th time. Coupe de France winner Lens will try to stop Luis Enrique’s team, with the draw giving the club an opportunity to host the match at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

Lens’ Depleted Defense Faces a Test

Lens had a busy preseason. After facing Boulogne (4-1) and Charleroi (2-2), Lens traveled to the Como Cup and won the tournament by beating Villarreal 3-1 in the final. The competition highlighted the changes introduced by new manager Dino Toppmöller. The team now plays more vertically and uses an aggressive counterpress. However, the final home friendly against Sunderland ended in a 2-0 defeat and exposed several weaknesses. The wing-backs often moved too far forward and left space behind them, while Lens was passive and error-prone when defending in a set shape.

Personnel issues will make it even harder to contain PSG’s attack. Three center backs, Jonathan Gradit, Juma Bah and Kacper Celik, are injured, while Malang Sarr left for Neom as a free agent. Key midfielders Mamadou Sangaré and Adrien Thomasson have also departed. There are concerns in attack as well, with first-choice center forward Odsonne Édouard picking up an injury in the latest friendly. Even with these absences, Lens is unlikely to abandon its press at home. The hosts will look to attack quickly after regaining possession and avoid extended spells on the ball in their own half.

Lens also has very little experience in matches with a trophy at stake. May’s Coupe de France final was the club’s first final in 18 years. Lens has competed in the French Super Cup only once, losing 1-0 to PSG at the end of the 20th century.

PSG Remains Strong Despite Limited Preparation

PSG had a very short preseason. The French champion returned from vacation on July 27 and used weakened lineups in friendlies against Mallorca (0-3) and Manchester United (1-1). However, the lack of match practice among several key players did not stop PSG from winning the UEFA Super Cup for the second straight year, beating Aston Villa 2-1. That game showed that Luis Enrique’s team can overcome organized and physically strong opponents through the individual quality of its attackers, even when it is not yet at peak fitness.

PSG enters this match without any notable absences. The club has also strengthened its attack. Maghnes Akliouche has already made his debut, while moves for Barcelona’s Ferran Torres and Ajax’s Mika Godts are close. The visitors are not yet ready to maintain a high tempo for the full 90 minutes, so they are likely to focus on controlling midfield through Vitinha and gradually wearing down the Lens defense. PSG should also overload one flank before using diagonal switches to create one-on-one opportunities for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia or Désiré Doué.

PSG also has extensive experience in finals. The Parisians have won 10 of their 11 finals over the past three seasons, with the only defeat coming against Chelsea at the Club World Cup (0-3). They have been especially dominant in the French Super Cup, winning the trophy in 12 of the past 13 editions.

Lens vs PSG Predicted Lineup

Lens (3-4-2-1): Risser; Ganiou, Nawrocki, Antonio; Abdulhamid, Bulatović, Cuisance, Udol; Thauvin, Sima; Fofana

Unavailable: Gradit, Baidoo, Celik, Chávez, Édouard (injured); Hazard (suspended); Ivanović (doubtful)

Manager: Dino Toppmöller

PSG (4-3-3): Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz; Doué, Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia

Unavailable: None

Manager: Luis Enrique

Referee: Jérémy Pignard

Pignard was one of Ligue 1’s strictest referees last season, averaging four yellow cards per match. However, he showed only three cards when Lens faced PSG on September 14. More serious sanctions are also common in his games: 10 of his 17 matches featured either a penalty or a red card.

Lens vs PSG Prediction: PSG to Win at 1.75

Main prediction: Home-field advantage is the only clear argument in Lens’ favor, and it is unlikely to offset the difference in quality. The hosts are still adapting to Toppmöller’s system, while Luis Enrique’s approach has produced consistent results for three years. Lens also lost key midfielders this summer and enters the game with several defenders unavailable. PSG has won the past eight head-to-head meetings, including games decided by a penalty shootout. The main selection is PSG to win at 1.75.

Goals prediction: Lens still carries a threat going forward. In its 90-minute summer matches, the team scored in four of five games. PSG has failed to keep a clean sheet in each of its three matches, while both teams scored in eight of the previous 12 head-to-head meetings. The additional selection is both teams to score: yes at 1.67.
