Sevilla vs Rayo Vallecano 15 August 2026 Prediction

Sevilla opens the new La Liga season at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan after another difficult summer. The Andalusian club is still rebuilding and enters the campaign with limited squad depth. Rayo Vallecano has also gone through significant changes. After a historic season, the team lost its manager and several important players, while the first matches under Benat San Jose have been inconsistent. Which side will adapt faster?

Sevilla Has Looked Solid Defensively

Sevilla had a fairly positive preseason, losing only two of seven matches. The team was particularly reliable defensively, conceding just five goals and keeping three clean sheets. The Andalusians shut out Utrecht in a 1-0 win and allowed only one goal against attack-minded NEC in a 2-1 victory. The final friendly against Bayer Leverkusen was especially informative: Sevilla led for more than an hour before conceding twice after the German side introduced several first-choice players in the second half. Luis Garcia has managed to build a functional defensive structure ahead of the league opener, although the squad still lacks enough depth to maintain the same level for a full 90 minutes.

According to AS, Luis Garcia still has limited options heading into the opening round. Sow, Gudelj, and Batista Mendy have left the club, significantly reducing the depth in central midfield. The departures of Sow and Gudelj are particularly important because both were regular starters last season. Guridi was signed from Alaves as a replacement. Marcao and A. Gonzalez are injured, while Pedrosa, Cardoso, and Ejuke have been made available for transfer for sporting and financial reasons. Vargas only joined preseason at the end of July after receiving additional time off following the World Cup and is still building fitness. Several young players who performed well during preseason could get an opportunity against Rayo Vallecano.

Rayo Vallecano Has Defensive Problems

Rayo's preseason raised more questions than answers. Benat San Jose replaced Inigo Perez as manager and intends to maintain last season's emphasis on quick ball recoveries and direct attacking play. The results have been disappointing so far, with Rayo losing three of four friendlies. Defense has been the biggest concern. The Madrid side conceded nine goals in four preseason matches, allowing every opponent to score at least twice. The final two games were particularly poor, with five goals conceded across a 3-2 loss to Charleroi and a 3-0 defeat to Ipswich. That defensive instability could become a serious problem at the start of the league season.

Summer departures have made the situation more difficult. Long-time captain Trejo and Nobel Mendy both left the club. The left side of the defense is particularly short on options following the departures of Espino and Chavarria. New signing Kumbulla should add depth at center back, but he is not yet ready to start. The main attacking core remains intact, while a court suspended Isi Palazon's ban shortly before the opening round, allowing one of Rayo's key players to face Sevilla.

Sevilla vs Rayo Vallecano Prediction: Sevilla to Win

Main prediction: Sevilla enters the opening round in more convincing shape. The Andalusian side lost only two of seven preseason matches and performed well in its final tests against solid opposition. Rayo's results were much worse, with three defeats in four games, including a 3-0 loss to Ipswich in the final friendly. The visitors are still adapting to a new manager, while the departures of Espino and Chavarria have left the left side of the defense especially vulnerable. Home-field advantage adds another reason to favor Sevilla. Our pick is Sevilla to win at odds of 2.30.

Totals prediction: Sevilla played relatively cautious soccer during preseason, scoring seven goals and conceding only five in seven matches. Rayo has also struggled to create consistently and failed to score in its final friendly against Ipswich. The recent head-to-head record points in the same direction, with each of the last five meetings between these teams producing no more than two goals. Another low-scoring game looks likely. Our pick is under 2.5 goals at odds of 1.68.
