Ecuador vs Germany 25 June 2026 Prediction
Final round in Group E: Ecuador have one point and no goals scored, so only a win will take them into the playoffs. Germany have already secured first place in the group, which means they can rest key players before the Round of 32. Can the South Americans beat the group leader and stay alive in the tournament?
Ecuador Have No Margin for Error
Sebastián Beccacece’s team have had very little luck at this tournament. Against Ivory Coast (0-1), they hit the woodwork three times and then conceded in stoppage time. In the second round, they were denied a win by the Curaçao goalkeeper, who set a historic record with 15 saves in a 0-0 draw. Ecuador are averaging 1.9 xG per game, but finishing has been a major problem. If they fail to reach the playoffs, poor conversion will be one of the main reasons.
Much of the responsibility falls on Enner Valencia, who has received chances worth 2.07 xG. Beccacece is unlikely to leave him out. In a decisive match, Ecuador need the experience and leadership of their captain more than ever. We do not expect major lineup changes from the previous games, but the tactical approach should be different.
Ecuador should not repeat Curaçao’s mistake and are likely to meet Germany in a low or mid block, looking for quick vertical transitions. That scenario should suit the pace of Gonzalo Plata and John Yeboah. Germany will leave more space behind the ball after turnovers than Ivory Coast or Curaçao did, and Ecuador have to use it. Moisés Caicedo should control the midfield. Only five players at the World Cup have made more key passes than him with seven.
Germany Can Take a Breather
Germany’s two wins had very different tones. Against Curaçao (7-1), they played with freedom. Against Ivory Coast (2-1), they had to show more resilience. Germany only grabbed all three points in the 94th minute, thanks to another excellent substitute appearance from Deniz Undav, who has 3 goals and 2 assists at the tournament. Both matches also highlighted one of their main issues: the lack of a true ball-winner in midfield and limited cover for the holding players after turnovers. It is telling that both goals Germany have conceded at this World Cup came from central midfielders. If they give Caicedo that much freedom, Ecuador can cause problems.
Julian Nagelsmann has a good chance to rotate before the playoffs, which should help Ecuador on paper. Germany’s bench is deep enough, though, that the changes could even improve the team in some areas. Undav has earned a start and can play either as a striker or as a No. 10. Amiri raised the tempo after replacing Aleksandar Pavlović in the previous round, while the quiet Sané could be replaced by Leweling or Beier. All of them are important players for their clubs and should be highly motivated to make an impact at the tournament:
“We need to stay on this wave because every win matters. This is an extremely important match for us. We 100 percent want to win and will go onto the field with maximum intensity. We are all ready and are treating this game like a final,” Amiri said.
The loss of Nico Schlotterbeck is a serious issue for Germany’s longer-term outlook, as he is out for the rest of the World Cup. He is the only left-footed center back in the squad, so Germany may find it harder to play through pressure and start attacks with the first pass. Ecuador will likely try to overload that side. The defensive chemistry will also be affected because Antonio Rüdiger, the main candidate to replace Schlotterbeck, has not started for the national team since September 2025.
Ecuador vs Germany Predicted Lineup
Ecuador (3-5-2): Galíndez; Franco, Pacho, Hincapié; Yeboah, M. Caicedo, Vite, Alcívar, Estupiñán; Plata, E. Valencia
Out: None
Manager: Sebastián Beccacece
Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Rüdiger, Raum; Goretzka, Stiller; Leweling, Amiri, Musiala; Undav
Out: Schlotterbeck, Karl, Gnabry, Kleindienst (all injured), Andrich, Baku, Mittelstädt, Stach, Adeyemi, Führich (all not in the squad)
Manager: Julian Nagelsmann
Referee: Tori Penso (United States)
Penso has extensive experience in men’s soccer, with 110 matches across all competitions, and generally tries to manage games with a lenient approach. In five matches involving Central American national teams, she averaged 3.4 yellow cards, and at this World Cup she showed three cards in Czech Republic vs South Africa. Ecuador can afford to defend Germany’s positional attacks aggressively, while Germany are effective at counter-pressing after losing possession.
Ecuador vs Germany Prediction: Ecuador Not to Lose
- Main Prediction: Germany are the more skilled and experienced team. In the first or second round, they would have been the clear favorite, but they have already secured first place in the group. Nagelsmann can rest key players, and it would make sense to do so. Germany’s backups are not weaker than Ecuador’s starters individually, but rotation should still affect team chemistry. For Ecuador, this is a must-win match. They had terrible luck in the first two games, and their one point does not fully reflect their performances. Before losing to Ivory Coast, Ecuador had a 19-match unbeaten run. Brazil (0-0) and Argentina (1-0) could not beat them in World Cup qualifying, while Morocco (1-1) and the Netherlands (1-1) also failed to do so in friendlies. All of those teams are in the FIFA top 10, as are Germany, who are ranked 10th. The options here are Ecuador not to lose at 1.91 and a correct score lean of 1-1 at 7.50.
- Goals Prediction: It would be harsh if Ecuador left the tournament without scoring. Beccacece’s team have already produced 3.8 total xG, a mark bettered by only nine teams, including Germany at 6.08 xG. Germany have conceded once in each of their first two matches, including against modest Curaçao, and now they may start a center-back pairing that has not played together since last fall. Ecuador have no room to sit back, so at some point they will have to take risks. That should raise the chances of goals at both ends. Both Teams to Score: Yes is available at 1.75.
