Trends and Streaks in DFB Pokal
VfL 1899 Osnabruck vs Bayern Munich 2 September 2026 Prediction
Osnabrück won the 3. Liga last season to earn promotion, but the DFB-Pokal draw handed the club a difficult first-round matchup against the reigning German champion. The hosts enter the game after securing their first win of the season, while Bayern Munich also recorded a convincing victory in its latest match. Osnabrück will now try to stay competitive against the clear favorite.
A Slow Start to the Season
Osnabrück opened its 2. Bundesliga campaign with two defeats. Timo Schultz’s team lost 4-3 at Heidenheim before suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Magdeburg. The newly promoted side came from behind twice in the opener and showed that it could create problems for a recent Bundesliga club. Against Magdeburg, however, a passive first half largely determined the outcome.
The breakthrough came in the third round, when Osnabrück earned a 1-0 road win over Bochum. Ismail Badjie scored in the fourth minute, and the visitors then withstood heavy pressure, including being outshot 11-0 in the second half. Still, seven goals conceded in three games suggest that last season’s main strength, an organized defense that allowed only 34 goals in 38 league matches, has not carried over to the 2. Bundesliga. Osnabrück rarely advances beyond one round of the DFB-Pokal. Its most recent appearance, in 2024-25, ended with a 4-0 first-round loss to Freiburg.
Schultz handed Münst and Beck their first starts against Bochum, and both performed well enough to remain in contention for the Bayern Munich game. Beck could be particularly useful. The midfielder, on loan from Heidenheim, has nearly 80 Bundesliga appearances. New goalkeeper Krumrey immediately became the first-choice option and should keep his place. Osnabrück also lost two important attacking contributors during the summer, with Kehl, who recorded eight goals and 12 assists last season, and Kopacz, who had seven goals and three assists, both leaving the club.
Squad Depth Makes the Difference
Bayern Munich made a perfect start to its Bundesliga campaign as Vincent Kompany’s team defeated Stuttgart 5-1 in the opening round. The game was competitive early on. Stuttgart responded after Bayern’s opening goal and eventually equalized, but the hosts increased the pressure after halftime and quickly took control. Ismael Saibari impressed on his Bundesliga debut, providing two assists.
Bayern Munich is the reigning DFB-Pokal winner, although the club had failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals in each of the previous five seasons. Harry Kane played a major role in that title run, scoring 10 goals, the club’s best total in the competition in 49 years. Bayern also has an excellent record against 2. Bundesliga opposition, losing only once in its last 20 such matchups.
Kompany may rotate his lineup ahead of the league trip to Schalke, but Bayern’s second-choice players still have a clear advantage in quality. Musiala and Gnabry remain unavailable or doubtful, but Bayern still has plenty of attacking depth given Saibari’s early form and the option to use young players such as Karl and Bischof.
Osnabrück vs Bayern Munich Predicted Lineup
Osnabrück (3-4-3): Krumrey; Fabinski, Müller, Weimann; Kammerbauer, Jakobsen, Wagner, Badjie; Münst, Beck, Meißner
Unavailable: Wensing (injury)
Manager: Timo Schultz
Bayern Munich (4-5-1): Urbig; Stanišić, Upamecano, Kim, Davies; Pavlović, Kimmich, Olise, Saibari, Luis Díaz; Kane
Team News: Gnabry (injury), Musiala (doubtful)
Manager: Vincent Kompany
Referee: Richard Hempel
Hempel has a strict disciplinary record. Across his last 20 matches in the 2. Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, he averaged 5.55 yellow cards and 26.45 fouls per game. He also issued five red cards and awarded four penalties during that span.
Osnabrück vs Bayern Munich Prediction: Bayern Munich Handicap -2.5
Main prediction: Osnabrück faces a major step up in competition after beginning its 2. Bundesliga season with two defeats and a narrow win. The club has also lost each of its last five cup matches against Bundesliga opponents. Bayern Munich opened the campaign with a 5-1 win over Stuttgart and also won the German Super Cup. Even if Kompany rotates the lineup, Bayern will retain a significant advantage in quality and depth. The main selection is Bayern Munich handicap -2.5.
Goals prediction: Bayern’s attack remains strong despite the absences of Musiala and Gnabry and should create plenty of chances against Osnabrück’s defense. Bayern scored 17 goals in six matches during last season’s DFB-Pokal run and has seven goals through two games in the current campaign. Osnabrück had the best defensive record in the 3. Liga last season, conceding 34 goals, but has already allowed seven in three 2. Bundesliga matches. A high-scoring game is likely, making over 3.5 goals the additional selection.
