Ipswich Town vs Liverpool 4 September 2026 Prediction

Gevorg Danielyan   Prediction by   Gevorg Danielyan     September 2, 2026

Both teams are dealing with similar issues early in the season. Ipswich have struggled with the pace of the Premier League since earning promotion and continue to make costly defensive mistakes. Liverpool are still adjusting to Andoni Iraola’s system as they look for their first win. Can the visitors secure all three points, or will Ipswich capitalize on their defensive problems?

Ipswich Town: Resilience Under Pressure

Ipswich have found their return to the Premier League difficult. The 5-2 loss to Manchester United highlighted the gap in quality. Gary O’Neil’s team could not contain Bruno Fernandes, who recorded a hat trick and an assist. However, the Tractor Boys have shown strong fitness and resilience. They have scored in the 90th minute or later in all three of their competitive matches this season. Jack Clarke’s late goal against Sunderland was particularly important, securing a 2-1 win in the opening round.

Ipswich made extensive changes to their roster during the transfer window. They added three quick attacking players: Paraguayan playmaker Julio Enciso, experienced Japanese forward Daizen Maeda, and Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu. The club also signed 6-foot-8 goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen. Sasa Lukic and defensive midfielder Florentino were brought in to strengthen the middle of the field. Ipswich now have much better depth, but the new players will need time to develop chemistry.

Liverpool: Persistent Defensive Problems

Liverpool have made an uneven start under Andoni Iraola, drawing 2-2 with both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Their main weakness has been defensive transitions. The high defensive line has repeatedly been exposed after turnovers, leaving large areas for opponents to attack on the counter. Liverpool’s defenders have often resorted to tactical fouls when unable to stop quick breaks. Three members of the back line were booked at St. James’ Park. Liverpool continue to create chances, but their defensive issues leave them vulnerable against any opponent.

Liverpool were relatively quiet in the transfer market, although they completed one major deal by signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for €125 million. The French winger adds pace out wide, while young Spanish newcomer Victor Munoz provides another option on the flank. Liverpool also signed Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona and added promising defender Jeremy Jacquet. Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andy Robertson left after their contracts expired.

Ipswich Town vs Liverpool Predicted Lineup

Ipswich Town (4-2-3-1): Scherpen; O’Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Nunes, Lukic; Fatawu, Enciso, Maeda; Akpom

Unavailable: Taylor, Philogene (both injured); Matusiwa, Emersonn, Florentino (all doubtful)

Manager: Gary O’Neil

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister; Munoz, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak

Unavailable: Bradley, Ekitike, Gomez, Leoni, Chiesa (all injured)

Manager: Andoni Iraola

Referee: Darren England

England was among the strictest Premier League referees last season, averaging 4.39 yellow cards and 22.04 fouls per game. However, he issued only three red cards and awarded three penalties across 23 matches. He began the new season with a more lenient performance, calling 19 fouls and showing three yellow cards in the Hull vs Manchester United match.

Ipswich Town vs Liverpool Prediction: Liverpool Handicap -1.5

Main prediction: Liverpool’s poor start increases the importance of this match. Their superior roster should allow them to control possession and put Ipswich under pressure from the opening minutes. Ipswich’s more aggressive approach could make the task easier. The Tractor Boys allowed Manchester United to attempt 33 shots in the previous round, while their man-marking problems gave Bruno Fernandes too much freedom. Liverpool have enough attacking quality to exploit the same weaknesses. Recent head-to-head results also favor the visitors: during Ipswich’s previous Premier League season, Liverpool won 4-1 at home and 2-0 away. A Liverpool win at 1.58 is the safer option, while the stronger selection is Liverpool -1.5 at 2.33.

Totals prediction: Liverpool remain committed to attacking soccer, but their defense has yet to settle. They conceded twice against both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, with each match ending 2-2. Ipswich have also played openly since earning promotion, beating Sunderland 2-1 before losing 5-2 to Manchester United. The expected goals figures from the latter match were 2.06 for Ipswich and 4.78 for United. The additional selection is over 3.5 goals at 2.28.
