Aston Villa vs Arsenal 31 August 2026 Prediction
Unai Emery faces a difficult task as he rebuilds Aston Villa’s squad. The schedule offers no relief, with the reigning champions Arsenal visiting Birmingham next.
Aston Villa: Major Rebuild
Poor starts to the season are becoming a pattern for Aston Villa. This year has been no exception. Emery’s side lost the UEFA Super Cup to PSG 2-1 despite winning the expected goals battle 2.49-1.58, then suffered a 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their Premier League opener. Those results continued a difficult preseason in which Villa lost to Porto 2-1, Real Sociedad 4-2, Bayern Munich 2-1, and Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1. Their only wins came against much weaker opposition, including Walsall 5-0 and an Indonesian League All-Star team 3-1.
The downturn is understandable after Aston Villa sold several players who had been central to the team in recent seasons. Konsa, Rogers, Martínez, and Watkins all left Birmingham. Their replacements have yet to adjust to Emery’s system, while others have been unavailable. Nicholas Jackson, signed to replace Watkins up front, completed his transfer only a few days ago and has had little time to build chemistry with his new teammates. Manzambi remains sidelined, while defensive midfielder João Gomes was sent off on his Premier League debut and is suspended.
Arsenal: Strong Start
Arsenal’s preseason raised some concerns. After a 4-1 win over Girona, Mikel Arteta’s side went three games without a victory, losing 3-1 to Real Betis and 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund before drawing 1-1 with Como. Results improved immediately once competitive play began. The Gunners won the Community Shield by beating Manchester City 3-0, then defeated Coventry by the same score in their Premier League opener. Arsenal look well prepared and enter the season as the title favorite.
The club also handled its transfer business effectively. Leandro Trossard’s move to Beşiktaş was the only major departure. Arsenal quickly replaced him with Christos Tzolis, who provided two assists in the Community Shield. Bruno Guimarães was the club’s biggest offseason signing and adds further quality to an already strong midfield. Timber and Saliba remain unavailable, but Arsenal have sufficient depth. They also signed Ezri Konsa from Villa as additional cover.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal Predicted Lineup
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Cash, Torres, Lindelöf, Maatsen; Bogarde, Kamara; McGinn, Barkley, Hemmings; Buendía
Unavailable: Onana, Manzambi, Majo, Abraham, Bailey (injured); João Gomes (suspended); Martínez, Watkins (not in the squad)
Manager: Unai Emery
Arsenal (4-3-3): Raya; White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori; Ødegaard, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Tzolis
Unavailable: Timber, Saliba (injured); Guimarães (doubtful)
Manager: Mikel Arteta
Referee: Jarred Gillett
Gillett’s numbers are around the Premier League average. He allows physical play and calls only 19.77 fouls per game. He also averages a modest 3.59 yellow cards. In 22 matches last season, he issued one red card and awarded six penalties.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal Prediction: Arsenal Handicap -1.5
Main prediction: Aston Villa beat Arsenal 2-1 at home last season, but a repeat looks unlikely. The Birmingham club enters this match in poor form after selling several key players. The departures of Martínez and Watkins, a long injury list, and a run of defeats have added to the problems. Arsenal, meanwhile, have a settled squad and opened the season with two convincing wins. The Arsenal moneyline at 1.58 is a reasonable option, but the better-value selection is Arsenal -1.5 handicap at 2.39.
Goals prediction: Arsenal’s early success has been built on a reliable defense. The Gunners kept clean sheets against Coventry and Manchester City, limiting Erling Haaland’s impact in the Community Shield. City produced only 1.12 xG, while Coventry managed just 0.20. Aston Villa are unlikely to create more. They have lost Watkins, and Jackson has not yet developed an understanding with his new teammates. Villa generated only 0.28 xG and failed to record a shot on target against Brighton. Our pick is Both Teams to Score: No at 1.85.
