Australia vs Switzerland 6 June 2026 Prediction
Two teams that have played at each of the last five World Cups will have their final rehearsal before the upcoming tournament on Saturday. Interestingly, Australia and Switzerland have never met at the World Cup, and their only head-to-head meeting so far was also a friendly, a 0-0 draw in 2010.
Defense Comes Before Attack
Australia have not missed a World Cup since 2006, but this time the Socceroos will arrive at the tournament with a fairly inexperienced squad. The roster includes 17 players making their major-tournament debuts, while only 19% of the current squad represents clubs from Europe’s top five leagues. At the same time, the most promising players are in the defensive line. That group includes rapidly improving Feyenoord left back Jordan Bos and Parma center back Alessandro Circati.
In midfield, however, Australia clearly lack technical players who can deliver key passes on the ground. That is why the team’s attacking play is very direct and often comes down to simple long balls. Set pieces and the involvement of 6-foot-7 Leicester defender Harry Souttar could have been a serious weapon, as Switzerland do not always deal perfectly with a traditional British-style approach. However, the goal-scoring defender is not in his best form after a serious injury that caused him to miss most of the recently finished club season.
The Socceroos have not faced European opposition for a long time, and they have not done so at all under Tony Popovic, but they have played teams from other confederations regularly in recent months. The results have not been especially impressive: four losses in their last six friendlies. Australia even lost to modest Venezuela, a team that has never qualified for the World Cup (0-1).
Experience Is the Main Advantage
Switzerland do not have many major stars, but the team’s long-standing core — Akanji, Elvedi, Xhaka, Freuler, and Zakaria — has strong chemistry. These players are unlikely to be surprised by the aggressive pressing Australia sometimes use. The only serious squad issue is the absence of Breel Embolo, who has not yet been able to enter the United States because of a criminal record. Still, it is worth noting that Switzerland are unbeaten in their last nine friendlies without the 29-year-old Rennes forward.
In their most recent warm-up match, the Red Crosses comfortably beat another upcoming World Cup participant, Jordan, making the most of their chances in a 4-1 win — four goals from 3.95 xG. Murat Yakin’s team are in strong form overall. Since the start of 2025, Switzerland have played 13 official and friendly matches and lost only once. That only defeat came against Germany (3-4), a top-10 FIFA-ranked team.
Switzerland’s strengths are control in midfield, a high passing level, and flexibility when moving from defense to attack. That should be enough to complete their World Cup preparation successfully. In their last three matches against non-European opponents — Jordan, the United States, and Mexico — Yakin’s team won all three, each by at least two goals.

Australia vs Switzerland Prediction: Switzerland to Win at 1.59
- Main prediction: Switzerland are clearly the stronger team and are deserved favorites with the bookmakers. Murat Yakin’s side are a stable and balanced unit built around experienced players who have long proven themselves at the highest level. Midfield should be the key area. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler are excellent at keeping the ball under pressure, controlling the tempo, and playing through the press with short and medium passes. Australia may struggle just to win the ball back. Their defense may not save them either. The Socceroos’ physical defenders are strong in the air and in duels, but they often lose their positioning and can be slow to react to ball and player movement. It is also worth noting that Tony Popovic’s team have lost each of their last three matches against top-20 FIFA-ranked teams: the United States (1-2), Colombia (0-3), and Mexico (0-1). Here, we are also backing Switzerland to win at 1.59. Higher-risk bettors can also consider correct score 2-1 at 8.25.
- Goals prediction: Switzerland’s clean-sheet chances are less certain. They have kept only one clean sheet in their last five matches. Even modest Jordan managed to score a consolation goal. Australia, meanwhile, have averaged 1.65 goals per match under their current manager, so for an additional bet, we will take both teams to score — yes at 2.06.
