There are only a few days left before the World Cup begins. On Wednesday, Germany arrived in Chicago, where they will play a friendly against one of the tournament’s three host nations, the United States. For the Americans, this is a chance to correct recent mistakes, as they have lost to each of their last four European visitors.

The Americans Are Focused on Attack

The United States are in a fairly optimistic mood ahead of the home World Cup. After losing last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup final to Mexico (1-2), they won five of nine friendlies, including victories over strong opponents such as Japan (2-0), Uruguay (5-1), and Senegal (3-2). During that stretch, the U.S. averaged 1.89 goals scored and 1.67 conceded per match. Their expected goals and expected goals against numbers were 1.46 xG and 0.99 xGA, respectively. That suggests they were especially efficient in attack. Goalkeepers Matt Turner and Matt Freese were not perfect, but they were not the main issue either. 

Ahead of this match, Mauricio Pochettino has reason to be concerned about the team’s poor record against European opponents: the U.S. have lost eight straight matches against them, with half of those defeats coming under his management. The U.S. are not a reliable defensive team, and injuries have made the situation worse. Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tanner Tessmann, and Johnny Cardoso stand out as absences: one defender and two defensive midfielders who were expected to play important roles at the World Cup. Fortunately, the midfield still has more experienced players in Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie. In attack, Diego Luna will be missed after recording 3 goals and 2 assists at the CONCACAF Cup. However, one of the nation’s main hopes, Christian Pulisic, is available. The winger had a weak second half of the season with Milan, recording no goals and two assists in 19 matches, but he posted 1 goal and 1 assist in the previous match against Senegal.

Germany Are in Excellent Form

Germany are on an eight-match unbeaten run. The country was close to concern after a surprise 2-0 loss to Slovakia in World Cup qualifying, but the reaction was strong. After that, the Bundesteam gave its opponents almost no chances and finished first in the group with a 16-3 goal difference. The underlying numbers support that result, with 15.18 xG and 3.72 xGA.

Interestingly, Germany have won two of their last four matches against teams from other continents, and one of those wins came against the United States (3-1), when Julian Nagelsmann was just starting his tenure. In the spring, his team should have beaten Ghana more comfortably than 2-1, but missed several dangerous chances despite producing 2.9 xG. The recent match against Finland (4-0) was a fairer reflection of Germany’s attacking output, with 3.77 xG. This does not look like a systemic problem.

Manuel Neuer has returned to training, but it is still unclear whether he will play before the start of the World Cup. Competition in attack has also increased, especially after strong performances from Lennart Karl, who had an assist, and Deniz Undav, who scored twice, in the previous friendly. Nagelsmann made only four substitutions in that match, so rotation should be expected here in order to manage the workload. That is especially relevant because the team still needs to acclimate after a nine-hour flight from Frankfurt to Chicago. Joshua Kimmich looks like the only clear lock at right back, while Angelo Stiller, the main organizer for Stuttgart, is likely to control the midfield.
