Paris Saint-Germain vs Olympique Lyon 26 October 2026 Prediction
For the second straight year, a schedule change has left PSG playing on the night of the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Last season, a storm postponed their match against Marseille, which they lost 1-0. This time, protests have pushed back their game against Lyon. PSG have 10 Ballon d’Or nominees, but their focus on the field will be a matchup between two teams level in the Ligue 1 standings.
PSG Have Improved but Are Missing Key Players
PSG have responded to a slow start in the league with four straight wins: 1-0 over Brest, 2-1 over Marseille, 3-1 over Le Mans and 3-1 over Strasbourg. Manager Luis Enrique’s substitutions helped decide the last two matches, with fresh players increasing the pressure late on. PSG have scored eight goals from 12.03 expected goals (xG) across their last three Ligue 1 games, so their finishing could still improve. They have also conceded three goals from 4.86 expected goals against (xGA) in that span. Strasbourg managed 17 shots despite having just 27% possession in its 3-1 loss to PSG.
PSG beat Barcelona 4-2 in the Champions League but lost three important players. Zabarnyi could replace the injured Marquinhos at center back. The captain has contributed in attack this season, scoring against Lille, Monaco and Marseille. The changes up front are more significant. Kvaratskhelia tore the ACL in his right knee and faces surgery and a lengthy recovery. With Nuno Mendes also out, PSG are missing two regular contributors on the left, where Doué could move in. Dembélé’s injury removes a player who regularly moves across the front line and limits Luis Enrique’s options off the bench. Torres is expected to start up front, with Akliouche on the right. PSG can still use a 4-3-3: Vitinha, Neves and Fabián Ruiz can control possession, while Hakimi provides width when he gets forward.
Lyon Create Less Away from Home
Lyon have won four of their seven Ligue 1 matches, but their away attack has been less productive. Against Toulouse (2-0), Paris FC (0-0) and Lens (1-2), Lyon averaged just 0.75 xG on the road. At home, they have averaged 2.5 goals and 2.32 xG. That makes their defending especially important in Paris, though Lyon’s five goals conceded through seven rounds came from 8.72 xGA. Toulouse, for example, generated 2.74 xG against them without scoring. Lyon have handled those difficult stretches, but they continue to allow good chances.
Lyon’s 3-0 Europa League loss to Hoffenheim came after manager Paulo Fonseca made extensive changes to rest players before the trip to Paris. The postponement gives Lyon an extra day to recover, although they still have less time between games than PSG. Options at fullback are limited: Tagliafico, Ouedraogo and Kango are injured. In a 4-2-3-1, Lyon can crowd the center and look for quick breaks through Nuamah and Atekame on the right. Injured striker Openda is unavailable to make runs behind the defense, while Nakamura’s suspension reduces the attacking options. Schulz is also questionable with a knee problem. Still, 10 Lyon players have scored in the league, more than any other Ligue 1 team.
PSG vs Lyon Predicted Lineup
PSG (4-3-3): Safonov – Hakimi, Zabarnyi, Pacho, Hernandez – Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz – Akliouche, Torres, Doué
Unavailable: Marquinhos, Mendes, Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé (injured); Longoni (questionable)
Manager: Luis Enrique
Lyon (4-2-3-1): Greif – Atekame, Bacher, Niakhaté, Abner – Bidstrup, Morton – Nuamah, Tolisso, Duranville – Merah
Unavailable: Openda, Tagliafico, Ouedraogo, Kango (injured); Nakamura (suspended); Schulz (questionable)
Manager: Paulo Fonseca
Referee: Jérôme Brisard
Brisard showed 75 yellow cards in 17 Ligue 1 matches last season, an average of 4.4 per game. He issued six bookings when these teams met at Parc des Princes in April. He has shown 16 yellow cards in four games this season, making at least four bookings a reasonable expectation here.
PSG vs Lyon Prediction: PSG Handicap -1.5
Main prediction: PSG should be able to sustain pressure on Lyon. Vitinha’s passing and Hakimi’s forward runs can create space against a defense that has allowed 8.72 xGA despite conceding only five goals. Lyon have produced little in attack away from home, and Openda’s absence makes them less threatening on breaks. PSG won each of their last two Ligue 1 matches by two goals before beating Barcelona 4-2 in the Champions League. The injuries to Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé make another two-goal win harder to achieve, but PSG’s midfield gives them a clear advantage. The pick is PSG -1.5 at 2.05.
Goals prediction: PSG have averaged 4.01 xG over their last three league matches, while their opponents have averaged 1.62, for a combined 5.63 per game. Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé are out, but Hakimi and Akliouche remain available on the right to supply Torres, with midfield runners offering other routes to goal. Lyon regularly allow good chances, so PSG could score three. The home side also leave space behind their high defensive line for Nuamah to attack. Lyon have a chance to score despite their modest away numbers. At least four goals have been scored in five of the teams’ last six Ligue 1 meetings. The pick is over 3.5 goals at 1.95.
