Cologne vs Hoffenheim 29 August 2026 Prediction

John Rowland   Prediction by   John Rowland     August 28, 2026

The teams finished 29 points apart in last season’s Bundesliga standings. Köln fought to avoid relegation, while Hoffenheim missed out on Champions League qualification on the final matchday and finished fifth. It was the second-best result in club history for Christian Ilzer’s team. The opening match will provide an early indication of which side is better prepared for the new season.

Inconsistent Stretches

Köln’s preseason form is best assessed through its August doubleheaders against Real Sociedad and Paderborn. The team first recorded two wins over the Spanish side, 2-0 and 2-1. Wagner praised his players’ possession, pressing intensity, and attacking transitions. However, Köln then lost both games against Paderborn, 3-2 and 4-3. Köln was the better team in the first half of each match and led at halftime, but then lost its shape for 15 to 20 minutes and conceded three goals.

The same issue resurfaced in a different form against Würzburg in the cup. Köln started well but conceded first and struggled to convert its chances before turning the game around after halftime through an Isak Jóhannesson brace in a 2-1 win. The team looks effective in possession and when pressing, but it has yet to maintain the same intensity for a full 90 minutes.

One of Köln’s most important offseason moves was retaining midfielder Tom Krauß. His transfer from Mainz became permanent after the conditions in his loan agreement were met. The club also signed Reigan Heskey from Manchester City and brought in Thijs Dallinga on loan from Bologna after he recorded five goals and four assists last season. However, the Dutch forward is still settling in and may start behind Ragnar Ache. Defenders Timo Hübers and Sebastian Sebulonsen are unavailable through injury, along with forward Luca Waldschmidt.

Building for the Future

Hoffenheim had an uneven preseason. The team handled weaker opposition comfortably, beating Holstein Kiel 3-1 and Karlsruher SC 3-0 in a match played over two 60-minute halves, but it was less convincing against stronger opponents. Hoffenheim lost 3-0 and drew 2-2 in two games against Tottenham on consecutive days, using different lineups in each half.

Hoffenheim was much more convincing in its first competitive match, recording a 4-0 road win over Erzgebirge Aue. The club’s offseason transfer strategy focused heavily on younger players, with Rots, Lenz, De Cat, Daghim, and Wimmer joining the squad. Nathan De Cat is a particularly notable addition. The 18-year-old Belgian has already made his senior international debut and played 46 competitive matches for Anderlecht last season. Hoffenheim plans to give him time to adjust, so he is unlikely to become an immediate starter. Patrick Wimmer has already taken on an important role, scoring twice and providing an assist in the German Cup.

Fisnik Asllani’s availability is a major question ahead of the match. After his proposed move to Leipzig fell through, the striker missed part of preseason and is not yet fully match fit. Andrej Kramarić is also unlikely to feature. The Croatian is still training individually following the World Cup and subsequent surgery.

Köln vs Hoffenheim Predicted Lineup

Köln (4-3-3): Schwäbe; Castro-Montes, Simpson-Pusey, Lochoshvili, Mensah; Krauß, Okan-Engstler, Jóhannesson; Thielmann, Ache, El Mala

Unavailable: Hübers, Sebulonsen, Waldschmidt (all injured)

Manager: René Wagner

Hoffenheim (4-5-1): Baumann; Coufal, Kabak, Hajdari, Rots; Avdullahu, Burger, Wimmer, Hložek, Conté; Moerstedt

Unavailable: Machida, Bernardo, Prass, Kramarić (all injured), Lemperle (suspended)

Manager: Christian Ilzer

Referee: Florian Badstübner

Badstübner is not considered a strict referee. He has averaged 2.25 yellow cards over his last 20 Bundesliga matches and has issued only two red cards during that stretch. He also tends to let play continue, calling an average of 21.35 fouls per game.

Köln vs Hoffenheim Prediction: Hoffenheim to Win

Main prediction: Hoffenheim’s advantage in overall quality gives the visitors a strong chance to open the Bundesliga season with a win. The recent head-to-head record also supports this selection, as Hoffenheim is unbeaten in its last four Bundesliga trips to Köln. Ilzer’s team also made a more convincing start to competitive action, beating Erzgebirge Aue 4-0, while Köln had to work hard for a 2-1 victory over Würzburg. The main bet is Hoffenheim to win at 2.10.

Goals prediction: Both teams have shown enough attacking quality to score in this matchup. Köln has conceded nine goals across its last four matches, but Wagner’s team has also scored at least twice in all seven of its summer games. Hoffenheim scored twice against Tottenham in its final preseason match and added four more goals in the German Cup. Both teams have scored in five of the last six Bundesliga meetings played in Köln. That makes Both Teams to Score: Yes at 1.53 a reasonable secondary selection.
