Union vs Eintracht Frankfurt 29 August 2026 Prediction

John Rowland   Prediction by   John Rowland     August 27, 2026

The opening round of the Bundesliga brings together two teams that followed similar paths over the summer. Union Berlin replaced its entire coaching staff and appointed Swiss manager Mauro Lustrinelli. The club also signed several players capable of moving straight into the starting lineup. Eintracht Frankfurt is entering a new era as well. Adi Hütter returned as manager following Albert Riera’s departure, while the squad underwent a more extensive rebuild.

Defensive Concerns

Union’s preseason results offered little evidence that the team is ready to defend consistently. The problems at the back were clear. The Berlin club kept only one clean sheet in 10 friendlies despite facing several modest opponents. A 3-2 win over Aris Limassol was encouraging, but Union then conceded four goals in its final warm-up against Ipswich Town, losing 4-2. Lustrinelli’s team also had to come from behind against Eintracht Braunschweig in the German Cup before securing a 4-2 victory.

Union does not yet look fully balanced, but the team appears physically prepared and has maintained its intensity after halftime. That is a positive sign ahead of the Bundesliga opener. Lustrinelli will also expect immediate contributions from his new signings, especially center back Van den Bosch and forward Latte Lath. Both started the German Cup match and scored during preseason.

Nsoki is unavailable with a muscle injury, while McGrath continues his recovery from a torn ACL. Van den Bosch’s place in the starting defense has therefore become a necessity rather than an experiment, and he is likely to start against Eintracht. Goalkeeper is another concern. Rønnow missed the cup match and is unlikely to recover in time for Saturday.

Eintracht’s Uneven Preseason

Eintracht’s preparation had been convincing until its final friendly. The 3-0 win over Trabzonspor was particularly impressive. Hütter used a 4-4-2 formation and selected a lineup close to the one expected for the start of the competitive season. The team maintained that shape throughout the game, pressed effectively, and regained possession quickly. However, preseason ended with a 7-0 loss to Brentford despite several regular starters featuring.

Eintracht responded in the German Cup with an 11-0 win over St. Tönis, scoring 10 goals before halftime. Starting midfielders Doan and Larsson missed that game because of muscle problems, and both are doubtful for the trip to Berlin. Theate was also left out. The defender is no longer part of the manager’s plans and could be sold.

Summer signings Onyedika and Otavio are already part of the core lineup, with Hütter starting both in the cup. Onyedika can strengthen the midfield alongside Götze, while Otavio is expected to play at center back. Burkardt and Ebnoutalib have become the preferred forward pairing. They started most of the friendlies and the cup match, and they are likely to lead the attack in Berlin.

Union Berlin vs Eintracht Frankfurt Predicted Lineup

Union Berlin (4-4-2): Raab; Juranovic, Querfeld, Van den Bosch, Rothe; Kemlein, Khedira, Aebischer, Burcu; Latte Lath, Ljubicic

Unavailable or doubtful: Skov, Friedrich, Nsoki, McGrath (injuries), Ilic (illness), Rønnow (doubtful)

Manager: Mauro Lustrinelli

Eintracht Frankfurt (4-4-2): Santos; Baum, Koch, Otavio, Kosugi; Onyedika, Götze, Uzun, Amaimouni; Burkardt, Ebnoutalib

Unavailable or doubtful: Collins, Ngankam (injuries), Larsson, Doan (doubtful)

Manager: Adi Hütter

Referee: Bastian Dankert

Dankert is a relatively permissive referee. Over his last 20 Bundesliga matches, he has averaged 3.1 yellow cards per game and issued two red cards. He also allows play to continue, calling fewer than 20 fouls per match on average.

Union Berlin vs Eintracht Frankfurt Prediction: Eintracht Frankfurt to Win or Draw at 1.53

Main prediction: Both teams opened their competitive schedules with German Cup wins after busy preseasons. Union, however, had a much more difficult game than Eintracht. Recent head-to-head results also favor the visitors. Union failed to win any of Eintracht’s last three trips to Berlin, recording two draws and one heavy defeat. The home team has also had two fewer days to prepare for the Bundesliga opener. The preferred bet is Eintracht Frankfurt to win or draw at 1.53.

Goals prediction: Union’s summer friendlies exposed significant defensive problems. The club failed to keep a clean sheet across nine preseason matches and conceded 18 goals against opponents of varying quality. Union then allowed Eintracht Braunschweig to score twice in the German Cup. Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, scored 11 goals in its cup opener and should have enough attacking quality to score at least twice in Berlin. The secondary bet is Eintracht Frankfurt team total over 1.5 goals at 2.09.
